HOUSTON - Despite overcoming a 4-1 deficit to tie the contest, 5-5, the University of Houston dropped its series finale to Kent State, 8-5, Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field.
The Cougars scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the contest but the Golden Flashes scored a run in the sixth and the ninth innings and two in the eighth to hold on to the lead and take the win in the final day of the series.
Junior John Cannon led all Cougars with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with an RBI. Junior Jake Runte was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
After surrendering three runs to Kent State in the first inning, Houston begin to chip away at the deficit, scoring a run in the second. Sophomore M.P. Cokinos doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and scored on Runte's RBI single up the middle.
The Golden Flashes added to their lead in the fourth with a single run but the Cougars answered in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Caleb Ramsey led off with a single to right field, while sophomore Chase Jensen doubled to left, putting runners in scoring position. Cokinos drew a walk to load the bases before Cannon singled to left field, plating a Cougar run. Runte then hit an infield single to the pitcher that allowed a run to score and pull UH within one, 4-3.
Kent State posted one run in the top of the sixth inning but Houston would tie the score in the bottom of the inning with two runs. With two outs, junior Matt Creel doubled to right field to put Jensen at third base before he was able to score on an error by the Golden Flashes right fielder. Cokinos would then send Creel home with a single to left field.
From that point on it was all Kent State as they would score two runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth to earn the win.
Junior Codey Morehouse tied a career-high, pitching seven innings in his fifth start. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Creel falls to 3-3 on the mound, allowing two runs with two strikeouts in the eighth inning. Senior Chase Dempsay and freshman Chase Wellbrock combined to pitch the final inning.
