Baseball Cruises To 14-11 Victory Over McNeese Sate

Lake Charles, La. - The University of Houston baseball team combined for six doubles and one triple to earn a 14-11 win over McNeese State Wednesday night at Cowboy Diamond. With the win, Houston wins its second-straight game and improves to 9-9 on the year.
The Cougar bats were hot in the victory over the Cowboys. Six Cougars recorded at least two hits, with Caleb Ramsey leading the way. The senior finished 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs. Junior Chase Jensen was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Landon Appling, juniors Matt Creel and John Cannon and senior Ryan Still each added two hits.
On the mound, junior Jordan Mannisto moved to 1-0. He gave up three runs with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Junior Jordan Lewis made the start, going two innings. He allowed three runs on four hits.
The Cowboys made the night interesting, as they attempted to come back from a 10-run deficit. They scored two runs in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the ninth to come within three of the Cougars but Matt Creel would strikeout three batters in the final 2.1 innings to allow the Cougars to come away with the win.
The Cougars made a quick start for the second night in row. Appling drew a four-ball walk to lead off the contest before scoring on Ramsey's double to right field. The Cowboys would match the leadoff run in the bottom of the inning, plating Blake Ellender after reaching base on a walk. McNeese State wouldn't stop there as they added another run on Taylor Drake's RBI single through the left side to take a 2-1 lead.
Houston took back the lead in the third inning as Jensen and Creel reached base on back-to-back fielder's choices. Sophomore M.P. Cokinos grounded out the shortstop but the at bat allowed Jensen to score and junior John Cannon hit a triple to deep left center, scoring Creel. In the bottom of the inning, McNeese State knotted the score 3-3, scoring Jace Peterson on Seth Granger's single through the left side.
With the scored tied, 3-3, the Cougars put up four runs in fourth inning, all with two outs. The inning would give Houston the lead for good. Appling started things off with an infield single. Ramsey's double to left center allowed Appling to score and Jensen put two runners on base after taking a pitch to the arm. Creel and Cokinos followed with back-to-back singles that scored three Cougar runs.
The Cowboys scored one run in the bottom of the inning but it only cut the Cougar lead to three, 7-4.
UH's biggest inning of the night came in the fifth as they posted seven runs. Junior Travis Trial led off the inning with a single through the middle, while Still followed with a walk. Appling singled to third base but an overthrow to first allowed Cannon to score and Still and Appling to move into scoring position. Ramsey's RBI single to center field allowed Still to score, while Jensen followed with a RBI double. Cokinos drew a walk to load the bases and Cannon plated two runs with a double to left field. With two outs, Houston would put two more runs on the board when Trial reached base on an error by the second baseman.

Following Houston's midweek action, they will return to Cougar Field to host a three-game series against Kent State on March 18-20. The series will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, continue at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and conclude at 1 p.m. Sunday.
