Cougar Tennis Rolls Past IUPUI, 7-0

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Houston tennis team opened up the final leg of a nine-match road swing with a dominating 7-0 victory over IUPUI Saturday afternoon at Five Seasons Sport Club in Indianapolis, Ind. The Cougars snapped a two-match skid to improve to 8-6 overall this season.
"It was really nice to have Celia (Fraser) back in the lineup with us," said head coach John Severance. "She had to shake off the rust, but played very well in the tiebreaker. We were able to hold Bryony (Hunter) out of singles and save her for tomorrow's tough match against Butler."
The Cougars set the tempo early, posting convincing wins at all three doubles positions to claim the match's opening point.
Giorgia Pozzan and Joanna Kacprzyk teamed up for the first time this spring to blank IUPUI's Vanessa Whyte and Danielle Haefele, 8-0, while Fraser and Hunter followed with an 8-4 victory over Alisha Cummings and Lee Matthews at the top spot to clinch the point. The Cougar duo of Maja Kazimieruk and Dionne Sanders wrapped up doubles play with an 8-4 defeat of Shelby Hullett and Jesika Bays at the bottom position.
Pozzan kicked off singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing of Haefele at the No. 2 spot, while Kacprzyk followed with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Matthews at the No. 5 position to put Houston up 3-0 in the match.
Kazimieruk ousted Whyte by a score of 6-2, 6-4 to improve to 9-3 on the season and clinch the match for the Cougars, while Sanders claimed her third-consecutive win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cummings at the No. 4 position.
Jo Garvey and fellow freshman Fraser, who made her first appearance since Feb. 20, rounded out the scoring with tiebreaker victories over IUPUI opponents at the No. 6 and No. 1 positions, respectively.
The Cougars will remain in Indianapolis to face Butler at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
