San Marcos, Texas - The Texas State Bobcats completed an 11-run comeback in the eighth and ninth innings and dealt the University of Houston baseball team a heartbreaking loss on a walk-off three-run home run to steal a 17-15 win on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Cougars overcame a 4-1 deficit, putting together a six-run rally in the fifth inning and added seven runs in the seventh inning and one in the eight but was unable to hold on and even the series against the Bobcats.
Senior Caleb Ramsey did his part in the contest, finishing 5-for-5 at the plate to tie a school single-game record for hits. He also finished with three runs, an RBI and a walk. Junior Matt Creel was 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs and four RBIs. Senior Ryan Still added a 3-for-5 performance, while freshman Landon Appling scored two runs with three RBIs.
The Cougar offense combined for 21 hits, their first 20-hit outing of the season and the first since Feb. 26, 2010. But the Bobcats also surpassed the 20-hit mark with 24 to guide the comeback on their home field.
Creel falls to 3-1 on the mound after he pitched the final inning, allowing five runs on five hits. Junior Jordan Mannisto was on the mound during the UH comeback, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just four hits. Junior Jordan Lewis made the start, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Freshmen Luke Moran and Chase Wellbrock also made a relief appearance in the contest.
With the Cougars trailing, 4-1, entering the fifth inning, sophomore Austin Gracey led off the inning with a double and Still followed with a triple to start the Houston rally. Appling hit an RBI single to center field to pull the Cougars within one, 4-3. Ramsey and sophomore Chase Jensen added back-to-back hits to load the bases, before Creel put the Cougars on top, plating two runs with a single to center field. Sophomore M.P. Cokinos loaded the bases once again with a single, allowing junior Jake Runte to send home the sixth run after drawing a walk.
Creel would kickoff a second big rally for the Cougars with a walk to open the seventh inning and after Cokinos struck out Runte earned a second walk. The pair on first and second would advance a base on a wild pitch and junior John Cannon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Still singled to send in a UH run and Ramsey singled to plate a second run. Jensen would single and advance to second on an error by the Texas State first baseman; which allowed two runs to score and Creel made his second appearance at the plate in the inning, hitting an RBI single to the pitcher, giving UH a 15-4 lead.
Despite the deficit, the Bobcats were not going to give up. They scored eight runs in the eighth inning and trailing one, 15-14, Casey Kalenkosky would hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning to hand the Cougars a loss.
