Baseball Cruises To 15-5 Season Opening Win

With the win, Houston opens the 2011 season 1-0 and records the program's first opening day win since 2008.
"It's an awesome feeling to win any game," Whitting said. "There were two really exciting things about tonight; the tremendous crowd and our players' execution of the game. Our crowd stayed in it even though the score got a little out of hand. They stayed here the entire time and I really appreciate everyone that came out.
"Before the game, we talked with the team about trusting and what we've put into it to get to today. Codey Morehouse did an excellent job on the mound and Jordan Mannisto followed him on his first collegiate outing and did a good job. I'm really proud of the team for trusting what they have learned and then coming out and executing as a team."
Morehouse put together a stellar performance on the mound, going a career-long seven innings while surrendering just one run on four hits. He improves to 1-0 following his first career start. Mannisto and Luke Moran each added an inning of relief, giving up a combined four runs.
The Cougars wasted little time scoring runs in their season opener. After batting through the lineup, Houston took a 5-0 lead through the first inning. Landon Appling started things off reaching base after taking a pitch to the shoulder and would score on Chase Jensen's single to right field. M.P. Cokinos put runners on the corners with a double to left field, before Austin Gracey singled to plate Jensen. Caleb Ramsey put the Cougars up 4-0 with a triple to deep center field and David Murphy plated the final run of the inning with a double to right center.
With the bases loaded John Cannon walked in the sixth Cougar run in the third inning and Appling's sacrifice fly to center field plated Murphy who reached base after being hit by a pitch.
The runs continued to come for Houston in the fourth inning. With two runners on base, Ramsey doubled and an overthrow by the Maverick's shortstop cleared the bases putting UH up 10-0.
The Cougars again loaded the bases in the fifth inning but only came away with one run after Cannon scored when the UTA pitching staff hit another UH batter.
After a scoreless sixth inning, UH loaded the bases with one out and Gracey's double down the left field line increased the Cougar lead, 13-0.
The Cougars scored two final runs in the eighth inning when Jake Runte hit a two-run home run over the left field fence.
UTA avoided the shutout scoring a single run in the fifth inning. They would add three runs in eighth inning and one run in the ninth.
UP NEXT
Houston will be back on the field Saturday for game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The series will conclude at 1 p.m. Sunday.
