HOUSTON - Senior linebacker Sammy Brown added another weekly honor Monday after a dominating performance against SMU on Saturday, earning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Brown led undefeated Houston with 10 tackles in a 37-7 victory over SMU, which included 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
Brown played a pivotal role in a defensive effort that limited SMU to just 24 rushing yards and 263 total yards, marking the fewest yards given up by Houston to a Division I FBS team this season.
Brown has been the country's leader in tackles for loss most of 2011 and has 26 total stops behind the line of scrimmage. His three sacks on Saturday pushed his season total to 12.5, which is No. 2 nationally.
His 26 TFL's is tied for the UH single-season record with Wayne Rogers (2000) and his 12.5 sacks is just behind the 14.0 accumulated by Phillip Hunt in 2008.
Despite playing in just his second season Brown has 46 career tackles for loss, which is already No. 4 in school history. His 20 career sacks are eighth all-time at Houston.
Brown and the seventh-ranked Cougars return to action on Friday at Tulsa. The winner of that contest will claim the Conference USA West Division title and host the 2011 Conference USA Championship Game.
