HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball senior point guard Porsche Landry was named the Conference USA Player of the Week Monday after a dominating performance in Houston's heartbreaking 63-62 season-opening loss to New Mexico State on Friday.
Landry tallied a career-high 37 points and tied a school and conference record with 17 made field goals, while also posting team highs with seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The 37-point effort tied for seventh-most in Houston history and was just six points shy of tying the school record. Landry's 17 made field goals on 28 attempts (.607) tied Houston's Sallie Routt (vs. Rice, 1989), while also matching Cheri Mills of East Carolina in 2005.
The Preseason Conference USA selection had 25 of Houston's first 36 points, and had streaks of 10 straight points and eight consecutive points during the first half.
Houston trailed the Aggies early by a score of 12-4 before Landry took over, scoring 10 of the next 14 points to give the Cougars their first lead.
Landry continued to hit big shots over the course of the contest to keep Houston in contention, and was a matter of inches away from tying the game with less than six seconds remaining after knocking down a jumper with her toe barely on the 3-point line.
Landry was also recognized by College Sports Madness as the C-USA and High-Major Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
The Cougars return to action against Texas Tech at 7 p.m., Wednesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
