Swimming & Diving Finishes Fifth at Rice Invite

HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team finished in fifth place at the Rice-Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Medical Center Fall Invitational. The Cougars return to the pool on Nov. 17-19 as they host the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
This meet was the first time all season that the Cougars competed in an outdoor swim meet. With Friday's temperatures in the 60's and chilly, the Cougars got off to a slow start.
"Yesterday was tough with the cold weather, it's tough to keep your core temperature up when it's cold like that.," said head coach Augie Busch. "But it's a level playing field and you just have to suck it up and get through it."
The Cougars had to muster their strength to get through the competition as they have been training very hard in their conditioning regiment at this point in the year. Coach Busch said the fatigue was definitely a factor but was counting on it as this point in the year, results in the pool are not as valuable as results in conditioning.
"That's where we want to be right now - really tired. We've done some great training this season already and we're on target right now with our training regiment. It's key for us to keep the girls confidence up and let them know that this is where they should be right now in terms of training, conditioning and fatigue. It'll pay off as the season continues."
Reka Kovacs led Houston with four top-ten finishes (400 IM, 4; 200 IM, 7; 100 Breaststroke, 9; 200 Breaststroke, 9). The junior also swam on five relays for the Cougars in a busy afternoon.
Senior Kim Eeson also notched several top-ten finishes as the freestyle specialist took eighth in the 50 free and tenth place in both the 100 and 200 free.
The five-team meet packed the Rice pool and the diving portion of the meet was held at the University of Houston's Campus Recreation & Wellness Center. With head diving coach Jane Figueiredo out of the country, the group of divers fared well in her absence.
Julia Lonnegren scored 278.10 to claim second place in the 1M dive and the junior finished in 10th in the 3M. Torri Olanski placed fourth and fifth, while Natasha Burgess finished sixth and fourth, respectively in the 1M and 3M events.
