MISSOURI CITY, Texas - University of Houston golfers Jesse Droemer and Bryn Flanagan finished the first day at the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational among the top-six individual leaders.
Droemer stood in third place after the first 36 holes at 137 on the par-71, 6,931-yard El Dorado Course at Quail Valley Golf Club. Flanagan fired a 2-under-par 69 in the second round of the day to tie for sixth place at 140.
Jesse and Bryn had very solid performances, and I was really proud of them," third-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "They played solid all day."
Senior Eric Adler was tied for 24th at 149 and rebounded from a tough first round to shoot an even-par 71 in the afternoon session. Junior Will Dusenbury, the 2011 Conference USA Newcomer of the Year, was tied for 35th at 153.
The HBU Husky Invitational was a recent addition to the Cougars' schedule by Dismuke. Because the Cougars only sent four student-athletes to the 54-hole event, Houston will not register a score in the final team standings.
Dismuke and assistant coach Chris Hill added this event to the Cougars' schedule to give the group some competition experience. Depth is a luxury that Dismuke has been looking to build since he arrived on the Houston campus, and Monday's performance showed how the Cougars have added that to their lineup.
"It's refreshing, and that's what we need," Dismuke said. "We need better play throughout our lineup if we want to be successful at the national level. The guys have working been really hard, and it shows."
Texas A&M led the team competition at 560 to finish the first day 20 strokes ahead of Stephen F. Austin. Texas A&M's Greg Yates stood atop the individual leaderboard at 134 after shooting a course-record 66 in the opening round.
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes slated for 8 a.m., Tuesday.
