University of Houston head football coach Kevin Sumlin announced today the hiring of former Harvard assistant coach Carlton Hall to join the Cougar coaching staff. Hall will handle defensive line duties as he has done the past six seasons.
"I am very excited to be at the University of Houston," Hall said. "It is an honor to be at an institution with such a strong football tradition and standard of winning. I am thrilled with the chance to coach in a great conference and learn from great coaches like Coach Sumlin and Coach Stewart. I am very familiar with the Houston area and have established relationships with the high school coaches from recruiting this city for Harvard over the past four years."
Hall just completed his fourth year as an assistant coach at Harvard. With the Crimson, Hall helped lead the team to a No. 11 national ranking in rushing defense, No. 13 in scoring defense and No. 16 in total defense. In 2007 and 2008 Harvard won the Ivy League, while finishing as the conference runners-up in 2009 and 2010. During the 2009 season, the Crimson allowed only 82.7 rushing yards per game.
During his time at Harvard, Hall helped tutor current Oakland Raiders defensive tackle, Desmond Bryant, who has played in 31 games in his two-year career in the NFL. In his four years, he also produced 14 All-Ivy League players, three All-New England selections and two All-Americans.
In 2006, Hall served as the defensive line coach at Georgetown University where they recorded 55 tackles for loss and 17 sacks, including 13.5 TFL from All-Patriot League player Alex Buzbee.
Hall worked with Columbia University's defensive line during the 2005 season and served as wide receivers coach for the 2003 and 2004 campaigns. During the 2003 season, Columbia was one of two schools, along with Texas Tech, to boast three receivers with 50 or more catches on the year.
Hall spent the summer of 2004 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of the NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship, where he worked with that team's wide receivers and assisted in offensive quality control.
He began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant coach at Asheboro (N.C.) High School, and the 1999 season as the school's defensive coordinator.
Hall enjoyed a standout career as an undergraduate, earning All-Southeastern Conference honors at Vanderbilt. He was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter for the Commodores, leading the SEC in tackles as a senior. He received the football team's Wade-Looney Award for perseverance and was chosen to play in the prestigious East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco as a senior.
Hall went on to sign a free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers in 1998. He graduated from Vanderbilt in 1998 with a degree in human and organizational development. He is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association.
