Cougar Tennis Team Sends Two to Finals of Islander Open

The University of Houston tennis team kicked off their 2010-2011 fall season Saturday in Corpus Christi by sending two members to the finals in the singles tournament and a doubles squad to the finals.
Sophomore Bryony Hunter, 2010 third-team All-Conference USA selection, won three matches on the day and defeated Mirna Cicak of TAMU-Corpus Christi in straight sets 6-3,6-4, in the semifinals advancing her to the finals. She will meet fellow teammate junior Giorgia Pozzan who won four matches on her way to the finals, including her semi opponent, Kim Anicete of Rice. She won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The final is scheduled for Saturday at the John E. Hoff Courts.
The pair joined forces for doubles and advanced to the finals after defeating a duo from UTPA, 8-1, and TAMU-CC's team of Cicak and Stefania Nicolae, 8-3. Hunter and Pozzan will square off against Rice's top pair, Anicete and Varsha Shankar tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Rice.
UH's sophomore Maja Kazimieruk and senior Joanna Kacprzyk also participated and each went 2-1 in competition. Kazimieruk defeated Bianca Discordia of Corpus Christi and Zalina Nazarova of UTPA before falling to Anicete. Kacprzyk was a winner over Reeta Raty of UTPA and Sandra Burges of Corpus Christi and fell to Cisek in the quarters.
The team will be back in action on Oct. 8 for the Conference USA Fall Event, which will be held at Rice University.
