Provo, Utah - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped its opening match of the BYU Molten Classic to Wichita State, 3-0 (14-25, 20-25, 22-25) Friday night.
Ingrida Zauere led all Cougars with 11 kills on 25 attempts for a .320 hitting percentage. Amber Brooks turned in 33 assists and Amanda Carson had a game-high 17 digs.
With the loss, Houston falls to 1-6 on the season. They will be back on the court Saturday at 11 a.m. when they take on tournament host BYU. The Cougars will then play their final match of the tournament against Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m.
"We played a very good team tonight," head coach Molly Alvey said. "They run a fast offense and we struggled to stop them. Wichita State is a strong program and we were right in it until the end. We just have to build confidence off this match and be able to keep creating offensive opportunities to finish in the end."
After trading points back-and-forth early the first set, Wichita State went on a 10-1 run to take a 20-9 lead. They would go on to easily win the set, 25-14. After falling behind 1-0, Houston came off the bench in the second set to trail WSU 12-10. They would play a close set before falling 25-20.
The trend continued in the final set as the Shockers took the final set, 25-22. Houston played a much tighter match, but the momentum was not on their side and they were unable to win the set.
