HOUSTON - With the heat index hovering in triple digits, the University of Houston football team competed in its second scrimmage of training camp Saturday morning on Carl Lewis Field at Tom Tellez Track.
Cougar fans in attendance enjoyed big plays on both sides of the ball during the 90-minute competition. Junior running back Michael Hayes started the day's scoring with a touchdown run.
Just a few plays later, junior running back Justin Johnson broke through the line and raced all the way down the field for the scrimmage's second touchdown.
A familiar combination to Cougar fans connected on the third touchdown of the day when senior quarterback Case Keenum hit junior wideout Tyron Carrier on a 15-yard strike.
Freshman quarterback David Piland, junior running back Terrell Douglas and freshman quarterback Terrance Broadway added touchdown runs later in the day, and sophomore kicker Matt Hogan added a field goal to lead the offense.
On the defensive side, freshman defensive back Aaron Johnson stopped a drive when he recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchback, and freshman defensive back D.J. Jones later added an interception.
CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED
Following the scrimmage, head coach Kevin Sumlin announced the team's captains for the season. Keenum, senior wide receiver James Cleveland, junior linebacker Marcus McGraw and senior linebacker Matt Nicholson were selected in voting by their teammates.,
