HOUSTON - Head coach John Severance announced the addition of junior Giorgia Pozzan to the University of Houston's tennis team on Wednesday.
Pozzan joins the Cougars after a two-year stint at Sam Houston State. The Lacchiarella, Italy native compiled a 29-16 overall singles record in her first two seasons as well as a 26-18 mark in doubles competition.
"Giorgia is an all-court player and a tremendous athlete," Severance said. "She will bring plenty of leadership and experience to this year's team and our program down the road. (Assistant Coach) Jo (Keene) and I are thoroughly impressed with her work ethic and athletic abilities. We are looking forward to her jumping into the top few spots in our lineup for both singles and doubles."
Playing in the top spots of a lineup will land Pozzan in familiar territory. In her sophomore season, she split time at the No. 1 and 2 positions to go 12-7 in singles action and 8-9 in doubles play. Her 9-5 mark in Southland Conference play ranked her fourth among the No. 1 singles players in the league.
As a freshman, Pozzan posted a 17-9 singles record for the Bearkats in 2009, going 13-6 in dual match play at No. 2 singles. In doubles action, she recorded a 12-8 mark at the No. 2 doubles position in dual match play and 18-9 overall.
Before she ventured to the States, Pozzan played in her hometown of Lacchiarella, Italy. She reached the final in doubles in the ITF Under 18 championship of Andorra and Rushbrook and was a semifinalist in the ITF tournaments in Lucerna and Dublin. Prior to that, Pozzan reached the second round in singles and doubles at the Trofeoi Bonfigilo to compliment winning a national tournament in Lesano Maderno.
