IRVING, Texas - Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Tuesday that former Cougar swimmer Sasha Schwendenwein was named a recipient of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship.
The $4,000 scholarship is awarded annually to graduates selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors. The scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
Schwendenwein was both an Academic and Athletic All-American during her career at UH and was named the C-USA Championship Swimmer of the Year in 2009. In her senior season she won the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle at the C-USA Championships.
A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Schwendenwein was selected to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and is a triple major in broadcast journalism, media production and creative writing. She will continue her education at Houston pursuing her Master's of Arts degree in Photography.
Schwendenwein is one of 12 recipients in 2009-10 and the fourth Cougar to earn the scholarship. Previous scholarship recipients from Houston include, Shelby Scott (2008-09, soccer), Sarah Fisher (2006-07, soccer) and Lucas Mireles (2005-06, track and field).
