HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team dropped the series finale to Tulane, 8-6, Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field.
After winning the series opener, 9-7, on Friday night, the Cougars dropped the final two games of the series to fall to 20-26 on the season and 7-11 in league action.
The Cougars were led at the plate by Ryan Still. The junior connected on two hits, while scoring two runs. Blake Kelso, Caleb Ramsey and Zak Presley all added two hits apiece.
On the mound, Eric Brooks went 4.1 innings in his seventh start. He surrendered four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Chase Dempsay, Taylor Hammack, Matt Creel and Mo Wiley all combined to pitch the remainder of the contest.
Houston played from behind for the second game in the series, but battled back early. After Tulane took the opening 2-0 lead on Nick Boullosa's two-run home run in the third inning, Houston quickly knotted the score 2-2 in the home half of the inning. Still doubled down the left field line and moved to third on Joel Ansley's single to right field before scoring on Presley's sacrifice bunt to first base. M.P. Cokinos followed with a single, plating Ansley to tie the game.
The Green Wave would then score a run in the next two innings to once again regain the lead. The Cougars, however, would respond with two runs in the fifth. With two outs, Ramsey singled through the middle and stole second base before scoring on Kelso's single over second base. Austin Gracey then plated Kelso with a triple to right field.
Tulane then scored in its fourth straight inning, posting three runs in the sixth, to take a 7-4 lead.
The next two innings would go scoreless before Tulane would score a run in the top of the ninth and the Cougars attempted to put together a late rally in the bottom of the inning. Still led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch, before scoring when Ansley reached on an error by the Tulane shortstop. Presley followed with an infield single and scored on Ramsey's RBI single to left field, but Green Wave pitcher Nick Pepitone struck out the final two batters to end the comeback attempt.
