Greenville, N.C. - The University of Houston baseball team, behind seven runs in the third inning, knocked off East Carolina, 8-6, in the series opener at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Thursday night. With the win, Houston improves to 23-29 on the season and 10-12 in Conference USA action.
M.P. Cokinos led the Cougars, hitting a three-run home run in the third inning, while Codey Morehouse and Joel Ansley each had two hits in the win. Chris Wallace added a home run in the eighth inning.
On the mound, Michael Goodnight collected his sixth win of the season, improving to 6-7. He pitched seven innings, surrendering four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Matt Creel pitched the final two innings of the game, giving up two runs with two strikeouts.

Caleb Ramsey continued the inning with a single to center field, that plated two Cougar runners, and Zak Presley's bunt scored the Cougars' fourth run. Cokinos then cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the left field fence.
ECU cut into the Houston lead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs off Devin Harris' two-run home run but Wallace answered with his home run in the top of the eighth.
The Pirates attempted a comeback, posting two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Cougars were able to hold them off and secure the win.
