BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Houston softball field team dropped the final game of the UAB series, falling 11-3 against the Blazers Sunday afternoon at UAB Softball Field. Houston falls to 18-19 (5-7 Conference USA) on the season while UAB improves to a 20-9 (6-3 C-USA) record.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead with eight runs. After loading the bases with a double, a bunt and a single, Kayla Orr hit a shot to centerfield, plating Martina Landrum and Caley Walden. Amanda Crabtree then loaded the bases with a walk. After Natalie Mitchell fouled out to first base, the junior pitcher walked in two back-to-back runs. Freshman Bailey Watts came in to relieve Crabtree, but Landrum got the best of her with a grand slam.
With one out on the board in the second inning, Brooke Lathan blasted a triple to right field but could not capitalize on her efforts as UAB retired the next two batters.
Houston scored two runs in the third. Katy Beth Sherman belted a triple to centerfield, batting in Ashleigh Jones, who reached on a fielding error by shortstop Orr. Mary Tyler Dobson followed with a single, sending Sherman home.
After a scoreless visitor's half of the fourth inning, Baillie Lott came in to pitch for Watts.
In the fifth inning, Houston recorded two base hits with a Sherman bunt and a Dobson single. Their scoring threat ended when the duo attempted to double steal and Sherman was caught at third. In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars robbed Orr of an infield home run when Melissa Gregson tagged her out at home after she hit a deep ball to right field.
In the following inning, Gregson hit a bomb to right-center field, tacking on another run for the Cougars. The round tripper was her seventh of the season and 15th of her career. UAB answered back with three plates to run rule the Cougars. Sallie Van Kirk reached on a single and took advantage of Walden's hard single to left field. Cameron Skates followed with a one-run double. After Skates shifted to third on a passed ball, Orr's long ball hit the left field fence which gave Skates the 11th run of the game.
Sherman and Dobson both went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Cougars. Crabtree (6-9) received the loss after giving up the first seven runs of the game in 0.2 innings.
This is the first time UAB has swept the Cougars in a conference series since 2002, and it marks only the second time the Blazers took all three games away from Houston.
