Softball Takes Series Against East Carolina in Game Three

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team took game three, 4-2, claiming the series against East Carolina on Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars improves to 26-22 (10-10 Conference USA) on the season as the Pirates drop to a 31-16 (10-5 C-USA) record.
Before the first pitch, Associate Athletics Director Chris Burkhalter presented a check in the amount of $7, 471 to the Susan G. Komen Houston Affiliate. The money was raised during the Fourth Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer Game on March 11. Over the past four years, softball has raised more than $32,000 to the charitable cause.
Once the game got underway, ECU wasted no time in the first inning. After drawing two walks, the Pirates loaded the bases when Mari Gusman-Brown hit a fly ball to left field which Katy Beth Sherman lost in the sun. On the next at bat, Charina Sumner scored on Kaui Tom's fielder's choice as Sissy Tiffany was thrown out at third. Sherman made up for her earlier mishap when she made a diving catch for the third out, ending the remaining scoring threat.
Ashleigh Jones hit a base single and shifter to second on Sherman's sacrifice bunt. Melissa Gregson belted a deep single up the middle, batting Jones in to knot the game 1-1. Reina Gaber followed with a double to center field allowing Gregson to score from second base.
Houston put up another run in the third inning. Gregson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by Tom. For the second time this game, Gaber batter her in with another double. In the following inning, Bailey Watts struck out the side.
The Pirates answered back in the fifth inning with a run. After walking, Sumner advanced to second on Christina Merrida's sacrifice bunt and made it home on Gusman-Brown's single.
The Cougars answered back in the bottom of the frame. After Holly Anderson and Sherman earned walks, Gaber tacked on another RBI when she batted in Anderson with a single up the middle for the final run of the game.
Watts (12-9) received the win after striking out six batters and walking four over seven innings of work. Gaber batted a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Cougars.
