HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team begins its run at the Conference USA Championship, 10 a.m., Thursday against No. 7 seed East Carolina.
The No. 10 seeded Cougars finished the regular season at 11-7, marking the sixth consecutive season they have won at least 10 matches under the direction of head coach John Severance. Their first opponent at the Championships, East Carolina, finished its season at 17-9. Houston leads the all-time series with ECU 2-0. In the schools' last meeting two years ago, the Cougars narrowly came out on top, earning a 4-3 victory.
The Cougars have shown improved play of late, winning three of their last four matches prior to the tournament.
Houston has been led by freshman Bryony Hunter, who finished the season at 13-5 in singles matches. The Harlow, England, native competed 17 times in the No. 1 spot for the Cougars, finishing the season 12-5 in the top singles spot.
Among the other individual players for the Cougars, senior Neila Starratt will be looking to go out with a bang as she competes in her final C-USA Championships. The Bedford, Nova Scotia, native went 8-7 in her final regular season.
If the Cougars are victorious they play No. 2 seed Tulsa, at 10 a.m. Friday during the event's quarterfinals.
