Morgantown, W. Va. - The honors continue to roll in for University of Houston sophomore pitcher Michael Goodnight. Three days after a 1-0 shutout win over No. 3 Texas, Goodnight was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/Pro-Line National Pitcher of the Week.
The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Goodnight earns his first national award after pitching seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Longhorns on Saturday at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The Houston native gave up just two hits with nine strikeouts, one shy of tying his career-high. By holding Texas scoreless, Goodnight recorded the first shutout of his career and the win gave Houston back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1998.
The Cougars became the first team in the history of the Houston College Classic to shut out consecutive opponents with the win over Texas and a win over Missouri, 3-0, on Friday night.
Goodnight went on to be named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team and was selected as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week.
Goodnight and the Cougars will be back in action on March 12-14 when they travel to Cal Poly for a three-game series.
