HOUSTON - After guiding the University of Houston baseball team to a 1-0 win over No. 3 Texas on Saturday, sophomore Michael Goodnight was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week.
The Houston native went seven innings against the Longhorns at the Houston College Classic, giving up just two hits with nine strikeouts, one shy of tying his career-high. In addition, his seven scoreless innings gave Goodnight the first shutout of his career.
With the win over Texas, Houston recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1998, following a defeat of Missouri on Friday. The Cougars also became the first team in the history of the Houston College Classic to shutout consecutive opponents.
For his performance, Goodnight was also named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team.
Houston will have the week off before traveling to California for a three-game series against Cal Poly on March 12-14.
