LAFAYETTE, La. - After a challenging first round, the University of Houston golf team used a steady effort in the afternoon session Monday to move into a fifth-place tie following the first day at the Louisiana Classics.
Facing wet weather and cool temperatures to start the day, the Cougars posted a team score of 297 to stand in a tie for 11th place.
However, with pin locations in the same spots, Houston rebounded in the afternoon session to better their morning round by seven strokes and finish at 11-over-par 587, tied with Conference USA-rival UAB.
Following Monday's play, head coach Jonathan Dismuke could not have been more pleased with the elevation of his team's performance from the first round to the second.
"This afternoon was one of our best rounds of the year. Everybody played well. We had to throw out a 74, and we haven't done that very often this year," Dismuke said. "If that was not our best round, it was in our top two this season. I was really proud of the guys."
Individually, junior Matt Eschenburg posted back-to-back career-low 70s to stand in a tie for second place at 4-under-par 140. It was the fourth and fifth time during his career that Eschenburg posted 70s in a round.
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Eschenburg led the Cougars with a 75.65 scoring average entering Monday's play.
Eschenburg was tied with Southeastern Louisiana's Philipp Westermann and UAB's Adam West with his total. Illinois' Scott Langley stood atop the individual leaderboard after firing consecutive 68s for a 136 total.
Senior Jackie Lindsey and junior Clark Mitzner were tied for 33rd with scores of 148. Other Cougars in action were senior Beau Davis (77-71 - 151; t-45th) and sophomore Eric Adler (81-74 - 155, t-71st).
Tulsa, Illinois, and LSU were tied for the team lead through the first 36 holes at 4-under-par 72. Southeastern Louisiana stood in fourth place with a score of 580, while Colorado (588), Southern Miss (590), Texas State (592), and SMU (592) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes, beginning at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday.
Tuesday's final round marks the end of a busy stretch for the Cougars. After playing 54 holes at the Border Olympics on Friday and Saturday, the Cougars traveled east on Interstate 10 to compete at this week's Louisiana Classics. That means 108 holes of golf during a 5-day stretch in two locations more than 500 miles apart.
