HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team closed out play at the Houston College Classic with a decisive 15-8 victory over Texas Tech at Minute Maid Park on Sunday.
With the win, Houston improves to 5-5 on the year and finishes 3-0 at the Classic for the first time in program history. The Cougars' previous best was a 2-1 mark at the 2001 tournament.
Houston didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard. With two outs and the bases loaded after three-straight walks, M.P. Cokinos singled to right field to plate the first two Cougar runs. In an attempt to close out the inning with the third out, Texas Tech pitcher Louis Head fielded a ground ball to the mound but overthrew first base and the error resulted in a third Cougar run.
Texas Tech then scored the first runs against the Cougars defense at the Houston College Classic in the second inning. With two runners on base, Tech's Michael Reed doubled down the right field line, sending in the two Red Raider runs.
UH answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the inning, that was highlighted by a three-run home run over the left field fence by Cokinos. The home run gave him five RBIs against the Red Raiders, tying a Houston College Classic single game record. The 10 runs also set the record for most runs in a single inning, topping the seven runs scored twice in tournament history. It also marked the first time since May 15, 2003 that the Cougars scored 10 runs in a single inning.
Leading 13-5 going into the bottom of the third inning, Houston tacked on two more runs for their final run total of the afternoon. Back-to-back walks by Cokinos and Presley put runners on base and Austin Gracey moved them both into scoring position with a ground out to third. Cokinos would score during the next at bat on a passed ball and Presley would follow when Tech catcher Jeremey Mayo overthrew the passed ball.
The Red Raiders then went three scoreless innings until loading the bases and walking in three more runs in the seventh inning.
The Cougars have now won three consecutive games against the Red Raiders and improve to 44-38 in the all-time series.
