HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team couldn't hold on to a one-run lead in the ninth inning and lost a close contest 6-5 to UTSA on Tuesday evening at Cougar Field.

The Cougars (12-11), leading 4-3, went into the ninth inning needing just three outs to secure their third-straight win, but the Roadrunners had other plans. Jake Wood led off the inning striking out but reached base on a passed ball. A UTSA sacrifice bunt moved him to second before scoring on Casey Selsor's single through the right side. Daniel Rockett put two runners on base with a single and the Roadrunners tied the game on Tyler Carpenter's single up the middle. Lance Brown's fielder's choice then plated the go ahead run.

Trailing 6-4 with one final at bat, Ryan Still connected on a pinch hit through the middle before scoring on Caleb Ramsey's double to left center but that would be all the offense the Cougars could muster, falling 6-5.

The Roadrunners took the early lead in the contest, put up a three spot in the third inning, including a two-run home run by UTSA's Ryan Rummel for the early 3-0 lead but Houston was able to answer back. Zak Presley reached base on a walk in the bottom of the third and the UTSA centerfielder dropped a fly ball to put M.P. Cokinos on base and plate Presley. Cokinos would then score on the next at bat, an Austin Gracey single through the left side.

Houston knotted the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the fourth when Chris Wallace scored off Ramsey's double down the left field line. Blake Kelso's sacrifice fly to right field then gave Houston the go ahead run.

Houston will travel cross-town for a three-game series against Rice on April 1-3. Thursday and Friday's games will start at 6:30 p.m. and the finale on Saturday will be at 2 p.m.
