Katy Beth Sherman made it safely to first on an error by first baseman Carrera, which gave Lathan enough time to cross home plate, knotting the game 1-1.
Bailey Watts came in to relieve Crabtree in the fifth frame after UTEP loaded the bases. The freshman pitcher walked the first batter, shifting Stacie Townsend home.
The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the inning when Melissa Gregson and Gaber batted back-to-back singles to occupy second and first, respectively. However, with two outs, Gaber was thrown out at second on Lathan fielder's choice.
Crabtree (6-7) received the loss after allowing two earned runs and three hits.

Melissa Gregson walked and continued to second on Reina Gaber's single to centerfield. The duo advanced to third and second after Brooke Lathan fouled out to right field.
Angela Spittler's plate patience earned her a walk. Gregson then scored when catcher Kayleigh Walts dropped the fourth ball and threw to third in attempt to throw the runner out but third baseman Ashley Collazo dropped the ball, allowing an opportunity for the run.
The Miners answered back in the fourth inning when Kayla Oranger scored on Stacie Townsend's deep single to centerfield.
Bailey Watts struck out the side in the fifth frame, sending each batter to the dugout swinging. In the following inning, Houston scored two more runs to extend the lead to 4-1.
