Softball to Host UTEP This Weekend

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team looks to improve on its 7-5 all-time record against UTEP when it hosts a three-game series against the Miners this weekend at Cougar Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
Houston enters the series with a 16-13 (3-3 Conference USA) record as UTEP comes in with a 22-10 (4-2 C-USA) record.
Houston lost the series last year, falling 2-1 in El Paso, Texas despite defeating the Miners 17-9 in game two. The last time Houston swept the instate rival was at home in 2008 when the Cougars shutout their opponent with a combined score of 8-0.
Freshman Ashleigh Jones leads Houston with a batting average of .337, recording 33 hits on 98 at bats. Sophomore Melissa Gregson tops the team's stats in runs (17), RBI (19) and ties for total bases (38).
Junior Amanda Crabtree leads the pitching staff with a 2.46 ERA, striking out 103 batters in 88.1 innings.
Camilla Carrera leads the Miners with a .417 batting average, tallying 40 hits, including 12 doubles, on 96 at bats. Stacie Townsend leads in the circle with a 1.67 ERA with 207 strikeouts in 138.2 innings.
