Concordia Defeats Cougar Tennis, 5-4

IRVINE, Calif. -The University of Houston tennis team fell to Concordia, which is ranked No. 5 in NAIA, Monday by the score 5-4 at the CU Tennis Courts, dropping the Cougars' record this season to 6-4.
"We have to put this disappointing loss behind us immediately and focus on getting ready to play Cal State Fullerton," said head coach John Severance.
Houston dropped two of three doubles matches to start the day, all of which counted for a separate point. The lone Cougar win in doubles play came at the No. 1 match where freshman Bryony Hunter and junior Joanna Kacprzyk teamed up to notch a 9-8 win.
Severance, however, was disappointed with the team's overall performance in the doubles segment, which saw the Cougars drop both the No. 2 and 3 matches after building sizable leads.
"Our doubles performance was the worst I've seen all year," Severance added. "We played well at No. 1, however, our No. 2 team blew a 4-1 lead and our No. 3 team blew a 4-2 lead. Those two doubles contests were decisive points in the match. When you don't do the right things on the court, you lose. Both Jo (Keene) and I are frustrated with the way we are playing because we are not doing the things we teach strategically or fundamentally."
During singles play, Hunter lost at No.1 while junior Elena Kazakova also went down at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Maja Kazimieruk dropped her singles match, falling in straight sets during the No. 4 contest.
Kacprzyk earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over CU's Johanna Sceresini in the No. 3 singles match for the only UH two-set singles match win as junior Laura Ring and senior Neila Starratt each earned proset match victories in the No. 5 and 6 singles matches, respectively.
Houston tennis will have a day off on Tuesday before returning to the courts against Cal State-Fullerton on Wednesday in Fullerton, Calif.
