Golf Moves up to Eighth Place at Bulldog Classic

CHOUDRANT, La. - Using a strong second-round performance, the University of Houston golf team moved up to eighth place Monday evening after the first day of the Bulldog Classic.
After limping to a first-round team score of 318, the Cougars stood in a tie for 11th place through the first 18 holes. However, the team rebounded impressively in the afternoon session, bettering their morning score by 19 strokes to finish the day at 617 and moved into a tie for eighth place.
"We have been getting off to poor starts, and it really cost us in the first round," Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "The guys came back strong and had a really good second round."
Junior Clark Mitzner finished the first day with a score of 150 to tie for 18th place and lead the Cougars on the par-72, 7,105-yard course at Squire Creek Country Club. Junior Justin Kaplan, making his Houston debut after transferring from Minnesota during the semester break, showed the best improvement of the day.
After posting a first-round 85, the Sugar Land, Texas, native enjoyed the team's best round with an even-par 72 and was tied for 46th with a score of 157.
Other Cougars in action were senior Jackie Lindsey (158, t-54th), freshman Jordan Rumora (158, t-54th) and junior Matt Eschenburg (160, t-64th).
Mississippi held the team lead after the first day with a team score of 6-over-par 582. Southeastern Louisiana stood in second place at 588, while host Louisiana Tech (600), New Orleans (600) and Oklahoma (601) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
Southeastern Louisiana's Cedric Scotto stood atop the individual leaderboard with a score of 3-under-par 141, two strokes ahead of Mississippi's Tom Brown and one better than Mississippi's Jonathan Randolph.
The final round tees off at 8 a.m., Tuesday.
