Softball Opens Conference USA Play Against Southern Miss

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team opens Conference USA play at Cougar Softball Stadium against Southern Miss in a three-game series this weekend. The series gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., with the second game scheduled for 3 p.m. The series will conclude with Sunday's game at noon.
Houston (10-9) enters the series on a three-game win streak after defeating Monmouth on Tuesday and getting back-to-back wins against Southern on Thursday.
Freshman Ashleigh Jones leads the Cougars in batting average and hits at .344 and 22, respectively. She also has 11 runs and seven RBI on the season.
Southern Miss (12-6) looks to recover from a two-game slide after going 1-4 in the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Golden Eagles are led by junior Jill Mathis who has a .439 batting average along with 25 hits, 13 runs, 13 RBI and a home run this season.
The Cougars lead the all-time series with a 23-13 record. The two teams split the season series 2-2 last year.
Following the Southern Miss series, Houston will host North Dakota State in a doubleheader at Cougar Softball Stadium on March 16. The first game will begin at 2 p.m., followed by the second at 4 p.m.
