HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team will host the Fourth Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game on Wednesday, March 10 at Cougar Softball Stadium. Fifty percent of ticket sales and 100 percent of proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure Houston Affiliate.
The Cougars will host a double header against Southern University with first pitches scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m.
The University of Houston Athletics Department and softball team were honored for this cause last year with the 2009 Impact Award for Community Service Group by the Komen Foundation. This annual event has generated close to $25,000 of donations the past three years.
Houston will opt for pink uniforms instead of the usual home attire for this special game. A silent auction will be held and will feature the game worn jerseys, helmets and other items.
Pins will be available to purchase for $2 commemorating the event and all proceeds will be donated to the Komen Foundation. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink to show their support.
SUSAN G. KOMEN FOUNDATION
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer for years and during her treatment sessions envisioned a way to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan's compassion for others, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would continue Susan's legacy and also continue the crusade to end breast cancer forever.
The Komen foundation is now a global leader for the breast cancer movement, having invested nearly $1.5 billion since inception in 1982. Through the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, the foundation is now the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
