HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team opens its 2010 spring schedule Saturday morning when it plays host to the Redstone Challenge at Redstone Golf Club.
The Cougars play host to Houston Baptist and Arkansas with the 18-hole tournament slated to tee off at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, on the 7,422-yard, par-72 course.
Fans should note that the Redstone Challenge is a recent addition to the Cougar Golf schedule and may not appear on earlier published schedules.
"This will be a good measuring stick for us to see where we are now and what we need to get better at," Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We must do a good job from the start identifying those areas we need in which we need improvement."
Although it has been more than three months since their last tournament action, the Cougars enter this weekend's event with momentum. In their final fall event, Houston captured the team title at the Husky Invitational - hosted by Houston Baptist - at Sienna Plantation Golf Club on Oct. 27.
At that event, four members of the Cougars' starting lineup finished among the top-seven individual leaders, including senior Jackie Lindsey, who won the first tournament of his collegiate career with a score of 143.
Junior Matt Eschenburg tied for fourth, while junior Clark Mitzner tied for seventh place.
"We ended the fall on a good note, and in the spring, we have the same objectives," Dismuke said. "We just need to keep trying to get better each and every week. In fact, we have to do a very, very good job in the spring because it's a long Longer season with more events culminating with the Conference USA Championship and potential NCAA Regional.
Those players, along with junior A.J. Ferries and redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds, earned spots in this weekend's starting lineup through eight qualifying rounds in late January.
Lindsey leads the team with a 74.73 scoring average, while Eschenburg is a close second at 74.81.
