Softball Defeats Jacksonville State 7-1

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 7-1 in its first game of the LSU Tiger Invitational at Tiger Park Friday afternoon. The Cougars were slated to play LSU at 6 p.m. but inclement weather forced officials to postpone the game.
Game One
Houston 7, Jacksonville State 1
Bailey Watts improved to 4-3 as she led the Cougars to victory. Over the course of seven innings, she faced 32 batters, allowed six hits and struck out eight Gamecocks.
Jacksonville State scored its first and only run of the game in the first inning.
Houston was quick to answer back in the second inning as Brooke Lathan doubled to right center, advanced to third when Katy Beth Sherman grounded out to pitcher Ashley Eliasson and then was driven home by Reina Gaber's single to left field.
The Cougars broke the stalemate in the fifth inning when Ashleigh Jones scored on Jennifer Klinkert's sacrifice fly. Houston notched another run in the next inning. Tiffany Galletti led off and was sent to first base after getting hit by a pitch. The junior right fielder reached second on Lathan's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on an error by Eliasson. After Gaber flied out, Jones sent Galletti home with a single to left field.
Melissa Gregson scored the Cougars' fourth run in the final inning with her seventh home run of the season. This began Houston's scoring frenzy. Holly Anderson, Klinkert and Sherman proceeded to score, totaling four runs off four hits, which sealed the Cougars' fate.
Revised Schedule
Because of the weather delay, the invitational was changed from a seeded tournament to a round robin. The Cougars will play Southern at 11 a.m. as scheduled followed by a 1:30 p.m. matchup against LSU. Stay tuned for a complete updated schedule.
