LAS VEGAS - Junior guard Porsche Landry was named the Conference USA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The award was the second this season for Landry and the fourth overall for the Cougars.
Landry earned the honor after posting 21.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in victories over No. 21 Nebraska and Louisville, a team receiving Top-25 votes, at the Duel in the Desert Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. Landry shot 52 percent (13-of-25) from the field, 50 percent (1-of-2) from 3-point range and 75 percent (15-of-20) from the free-throw line.
Against the Huskers, Landry battled early foul trouble and played only 10 minutes in the first half before going off for 18 of her 21 points in the second frame to lead Houston to the first win over a ranked opponent by a C-USA team this season. Landry helped the Cougars fend off a late Nebraska push, scoring Houston's last six points over the final two minutes.
The Houston native anchored the Cougars' high-powered attack against Louisville on Sunday, posting another 21-point performance to go with five assists and four boards.
Landry leads the Cougars with 18.0 points per game this season to go with 4.6 assists per contest.
Houston wraps up play in Las Vegas at 6:00 p.m. CT on Monday against Marist (8-2).
