Houston vs. UT Arlington Post Game Quotes Houston 88, UT Arlington 48
HOUSTON HEAD COACH Todd Buchanan
On being nervous on first game at UH
"I was, no question about it. From my playing days to coaching my first games as an assistant and head coach, I honestly don't know of a single that I haven't had butterflies or been nervous. But I think that's what make makes my internal intensity level as high as it is at times. A lot of people don't see that side of it and that's what. Anxious is probably the better word."
On what made the nerves finally settle
"Brittney Scott made the first shot. We got shots that we really worked hard to get and I felt that the majority were good, but it was just one of those nights. I've always said I'm more of a defensive philosophy type of coach. There's going to be nights that the ball isn't going to be going in the basket for a while. We can always defend and that's the brand and back bone of every great championship team. When I saw Brittney's shot go in I knew we were ready to roll."
On taking any negatives from a forty-point win
"I don't know if I would call it a negative. I think there's so many things that we can improve on and get better at. When I called the one time out I was pretty intense. We had gone through a time that we weren't playing the type of ball I wanted to play. That's every possession and we are going to go all out. I've told them from day one that I'm going to be all in."
On bouncing back from the slow start
"Any time you can hold a team to 27 percent from the field and force thirty turnovers I'm going to be more pleased than dissatisfied. I credit our kids and our staff as well. This was Coach Scott's scout and he did a great job in getting the kids prepared. They did an incredible job being focus and doing the tasks at hand. I want this to be NCAA championship basketball, and that means I want us to have give it our all every possession, every game and every four-minute period, and if we don't win, we don't advance.
On Porshe Landry
"She did an incredible job. I thought she really pushed us in transition and distributed the ball well. She knows one speed and that's fifth gear and I have no problem with that. There are players that can make certain plays at the certain time and we are continuing to learn that.
JUNIOR GUARD Porsche Landry
On her initial thoughts of the game
"We had a slow start and Coach (Todd) Buchanan called a timeout and got after us and we came back out and started playing our ball."
On head coach Todd Buchanan's style of play
"It's fast-paced with a lot of pressing and ball pressure."
SENIOR FORWARD Courtney Taylor
On her thoughts about the new up-tempo game style
"I think we can run a lot of teams and they'll have trouble keeping up with us in transition. It's a good style of offense."
On possible first-game jitters as the explanation to the team's slow start
"I think it was more us, we just got off to a slow start. I don't think they did anything in particular or that we were nervous - or at least I wasn't nervous - I just think we were slow to get started. We kind of dragged around before since the guys played so it took us a little while to get started. We didn't get to shoot around as much as we normally do."
On if Buchanan will approve of the team's defensive effort
"We did an excellent job on defense. I think our defense brought on our offense after we got the slow start."
On adjusting to playing high-energy, high-pressure defense
"We work hard during the week in practice so we carry it over. It's a little different and it's been a little hard to get used to, but I think we are showing that we can do it. It's all coming together."
On high expectations for the season being more pressure or more enjoyment
"Me personally, I don't think about it. I just go out and play every game like it's the last one. Coach told us to act like we playing in the NCAA tournament, one-and-done, every game. In previous seasons everybody has been coming after us, so it's something I've gotten used to. You just have to go hard every game."
SENIOR FORWARD Lesslee Mason
On her performance
"I did get off to a slow start. I actually think that I was playing too fast at the beginning and missing a lot of easy shots. Then I got into foul trouble from not being as disciplined as I should be. I picked it up in the second half and was able to stay on the floor, so that was nice."
On the transition of having a new coach from the time of his hiring to today's first game
"In general, everything is just more organized. Coach comes in, we always have a game plan and we always know what to expect. Even in practice, he always tells us upfront what we're going to do every practice. That's what I like about this year is having a lot more structure."
