Four Cougars Advance on Day One of Rice Invitational

HOUSTON - Four University of Houston women's tennis players advanced in singles play on the opening day of the Rice Invitational at Jake Hess Stadium in Houston.
Newcomer Giorgia Pozzan improved to 5-0 in fall play with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alyssa Caffey of Lee College to advance into Saturday's semifinal round.
Joanna Kacprzyk cruised past Southern Miss' Moorea Williams by a score of 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Maja Kazimieruk also posted a straight-sets victory over Marie Leblonde of UTEP by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to jump to 3-1 on the year.
Senior Elena Kazakova saw her first action of the season, defeating Jessica Lange of Tulane by a score of 6-4, 6-4 to cruise into the semifinals.
In doubles action, the Cougar tandem of Bryony Hunter and Pozzan topped the Lee College duo of Gabb and Caffey by a score of 8-4 to push their record to a perfect 5-0 mark. Houston's Kazimieruk and Jo Garvey also teamed up to defeat the Southern Miss tandem of Bradley and Rogers, 8-3.
