Softball Gears Up for Final Fall Weekend

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team will look to build off the momentum gathered in last weekend's tournament when the team competes in the Sugar Land College Classic on Oct. 9-10.
The Cougars are coming off of a 2-2 opening weekend finish at the Spring Klein College Classic last weekend, earning wins against Baylor and Alvin Community College. After a tough 0-2 first day, filled with working out nerves and getting used to each other on the playing field, UH showed marked improvement in the second day.
After a strong week of practice, head coach Kyla Holas plans to see even more progress this weekend.
"I'm hoping that having played last weekend, we've gotten all of those jitters out of the way," Holas said. "We've seen them responding to and seeing the adjustments they need to make. Yesterday (Wednesday) was probably one of the best days of practice we've had. We're slowly starting to see signs of progress. We're seeing it now and I think that's getting everybody pretty excited. We're really trying to get better instead of just showing up and getting by."
Hosted by the Sugar Land Girls Softball Association (SLGSA), the Cougars will play back-to-back games both days of the tournament, squaring off against Galveston College and Texas State at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, on Saturday. Houston split the season series with Galveston in 2010 and fell to Texas State last weekend, 2-0.
On Sunday, the Cougars take on a 2010 NCAA Super Regional team, Louisiana-Lafayette, at noon. In three meetings last season, UH handed UL one of its 18 losses as the Ragin' Cajuns went 45-18 last season. Louisiana was receiving votes by the end of the spring before falling to the NCAA tournament's overall-No. 5 seed, UCLA, in the Super Regionals.
The Cougars wrap up their fall schedule against San Jacinto College on Sunday at 2 p.m. Houston won the only meeting between the two last season.
All games will be played at Imperial Park located at 7720 Highway 90A in Sugar Land, Texas.
