HOUSTON - Carrying an undefeated Conference USA Record (4-0-0) and off to the best start in program history (9-2-1), the Cougar soccer team travels to UCF Friday for a 6 p.m. match and travels to Southern Miss Sunday for a 12 p.m. kickoff. Houston brings a six-game winning streak to the road stand.
The Cougars have reeled off four straight C-USA victories to open the season, including two overtime victories. Houston has held their conference foes scoreless so far this season in large part to their defense and C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Cami Koski.
Koski totaled 11 saves over the weekend to keep the nets clean.
Offensively, senior captain Lauri Byrne paces the team with five goals followed closely behind by freshman Sami Sackos who leads the team with three assists and is second in goals with four.
Houston has found balance in offense this year with 11 players having scored a goal and recorded an assist.
"Balance, both offensively and defensively, and within our team's scoring chances is something we strive for," said head coach Susan Bush. "We have great talent, depth and conditioning so we need as many players as possible contributing for us to be at the top of our game."
UCF
Houston holds a 0-5-0 record versus the Knights having dropped last year's contest in a close 1-2 match. Morgan Vela scored her first career goal against UCF last season off a Jessica Zavalza pass.
The Knights are ranked No. 19 and are in third place in C-USA standings, facing both the top two teams at home this weekend, Houston and Rice.
SOUTHERN MISS
The Cougars are 9-0-2 against the Golden Eagles and have won three straight matches including last year's 2-1 victory. Lauri Byrne scored a goal and had an assist to Katelyn Rhodes as the Cougars led from start to finish.
Southern Miss heads into the game with a 3-7-1 record and 0-3 in C-USA.
