HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team took its day off and gave their time to the kick-off event for Marathon Kids on Oct. 2.
Marathon Kids is a non-profit program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade that promotes endurance building, running and walking and psychological well-being.
Houston is one of the newest cities to participate in the organization and they held their kick-off event on Saturday at the Tom Tellez Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
The volleyball team, along with other UH sports programs, assisted with the event by volunteering at the start and finish of the race, cheering on the kids as they competed and signing autographs following the event.
"We had such a great time at the Marathon Kids event," head coach Molly Alvey said. "We laughed and cheered. It is amazing what a small contribution of time can mean to people and more than anything what it teaches us as a team. Our program, staff and team members love being involved with those in our Houston community."
Following the event, Houston traveled to UTEP and knocked off the Miners, 3-0, the following day for the team's third-straight Conference USA win.
The Cougars will be back in action on Oct. 9-10 when they host Southern Miss. Matches on both days are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The weekend is also the program's annual Alumni Weekend.
