HOUSTON - The Cougars beat UTEP 2-0 at Robertson Stadium Sunday afternoon. Houston improves to 9-2-1 overall and 4-0 in Conference USA , and have yet to allow a goal in conference play.
Houston is riding a six-game winning streak and have only allowed one goal while scoring 15 goals during that span.
Once again, the Cougars were able to wear down their opponents and open up a lead in the second half. Houston has outscored their opponents 20-3 after the first half this year.
"I had a feeling in the second half with the depth and quality of, this team that we would get something going," said head coach Susan Bush. "I was proud of our girls and everyone contributed today, it was a good win."
Freshman keeper Cami Koski posted her six clean sheet of the year and was a major force over the weekend by keeping the nets still. Koski followed up her career-high six saves on Friday with five on Sunday.
A UTEP forward gave a hard foul to Koski, who needed to run over to the sideline to asses the situation, but Koski was able to return to goal with no time missed.
"Cami continues to improve every week and is a really great leader for our team. She was secure with the ball and aggressive on her feet in the box when she needed to be today and really had an outstanding weekend."
Senior Melanie Adelman provided the gamewinner in the 54th minute. Kylie Cook made a long, daring cross from the right side of the field and forced the goalie to make a play on the ball and she was able to punch the ball outside the goal area but when she did, Adelman was able to pounce on the ball and set up her shot. Adelman bent the ball around the charging defenders to the far side netting for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 66th minute, another cross from the right side led to a goal for Houston. Thulin led the attack from the right side and drilled a low cross into the goal area where Lauri Byrne provided a nifty goal for her team-leading fifth of the season. With her right foot, she was able to take the ball from the air and flick it into the goal with her back heel.
"I positioned myself wide and Kylie played me a ball over the top," Thulin said. "I took a touch, looked up and saw Lauri making a great run near post so I drove it towards her and she made a great goal."
Byrne moved into seventh all-time in goals scored at Houston (12).
