2011 Striking Out Breast Cancer Game - Information Flier
HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball program announced the details for the Fifth Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game on Friday.
For the fifth-consecutive season, the Cougars will play host to the annual game, which includes a silent auction consisting of items collected by the team and coaching staff throughout the year. Additionally, the pink jerseys and helmets the team will wear in honor of the cause will also be available for bidding throughout the game.
All of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Houston affiliate along with half of the game's ticket revenue.
During the 2011 season, the event will return to its roots as the Striking Out Breast Cancer game will take place against Texas A&M on Wednesday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. The Aggies took the opponent dugout in the event's inaugural year.
"We usually try to make it a game that is going to draw well because we realize that the fans in the stands also know that it's about something bigger than us," head coach Kyla Holas said. "So the more people that we can get there to support this event, the better. I'm glad that it worked out this way. In the past, we've competed with a lot of other UH events."
The midweek game is the only event on Houston's schedule that day, making it easier for the Cougar faithful to make its way out to the yearly fundraiser. Holas is happy with the support softball's fan base has shown, but is always excited to see new friends of the program come out for events such as this.
Each year, Holas asks her players to secure five items for the silent auction and their contributions rarely fail to amaze her. With six newcomers on this year's squad, Holas is looking forward to what a new crew of players and parents will add.
"The UH community supports it well," Holas said. "All of our backers and supporters come, and our parents really do a great job with the event. Those really close with our program see what a special event this is and what we've been able to do with it."
Anyone interested in donating items to the silent auction can do so by contacting head coach Kyla Holas at 713-743-9339.
The Cougars closed their fall schedule last weekend at the Sugar Land College Classic and will open their season on Feb. 11-13 when UH hosts the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational.
