HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team continued its long-standing tradition of giving back to the community Saturday when it volunteered its time at the West University Girls Softball League.
"The girls did a tremendous job of representing the University of Houston on Saturday," head coach Kyla Holas said. "We had a great turnout and got a very positive response from the attendees. I am proud of the people we have recruited both on the field and in community every day."
The Cougars spent the day teaching the local area youth about softball. The team instructed 70 girls, ranging in age groups from 12 and under to 10 and under, on how to hit, run bases, pitch, catch, throw and field.
Since the program's inception in 2001, Holas has emphasized the importance of being a well-balanced student-athlete and has encouraged her players to excel on the field, in the classroom and throughout the community.
The Cougars have donated more than $25,000 to the Susan G. Komen Houston Affiliate after three years of their annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game. One hundred percent of the proceeds, including a silent auction with the player's helmets and jerseys worn during the game, are donated to the foundation.
In May, softball was the proud recipient of the 2009 Impact Award for Community Service Group.
Organizations chosen to receive the award are recognized for their exceptional contributions in one or more of the Affiliate programs and overall positive impact in the community to enhance breast health awareness.
This year Houston hopes to raise more than $10,000 during their Fourth-Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game on March 10 when they play Southern at 5 p.m.
