Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Houston volleyball team was swept by the Arizona Wildcats, 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 27-29) on Friday night in their second match of the Wildcat Classic.
Ingrida Zauere and Kinsey Cave led the Cougars with 10 kills each. Zauere added two blocks on the night. Tara Roenicke paced the team with 27 assists.
Houston fell behind 4-0 to open the first set and they would never be able to overcome the deficit. With the 14 points they scored, UH was held to its lowest scoring total since posting 13 points against Baylor on Aug. 28. UH was then able to rebound in the scoring department against the Wildcats in the second set but once again the home team got the best of the Cougars.
Despite leading much of the third set, Houston could not hold onto the momentum they seemed to gain throughout the match. After holding an 18-17 lead, the Wildcats notched back-to-back points on a block and a Houston attack error to regain the lead. When all seemed to be lost, the Cougars battled back, however, and forced a 25-25 tie. They battled back and forth until Arizona slipped away with a 29-27 win. It was the first time this season that the Cougars went on to score extra points in a set. Two previous UH opponents had done so last weekend at the Flo Hyman Invitational.
Houston falls to 1-5 on the season. Earlier in the day, the Cougars dropped a four-set match to the Eastern Washington Eagles.
UH will close out tournament play against Nevada on Saturday at 1 p.m. Gametracker will be available for the match by logging on to www.UHCougars.com.
