Birmingham, Ala. - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped its league opener 3-1 (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25) Friday night against UAB at Bartow Arena. With the loss, Houston falls to 3-13 on the season and 0-1 in Conference USA.
Senior Kinsey Cave recorded a game-high 22 kills, for her 11th double-digit kill match this season. It also marked the third time in 2009 that Cave has passed the 20 kills plateau. Freshman Tara Roenicke finished with 41 assists while junior Amanda Carson notched 30 digs. The 30 digs were just five shy of tying her career-high and it was just the second time in her career that she has recorded at least 30 kills.
Three Blazers recorded double-digit kills led by the 17 notched by Michelle Uzoh. Alison Woods added a game-high 45 assists.
UAB jumped out to a 11-5 lead in the first set before the Cougars managed to pull within three, 20-17, late in the set but the deficit would be too much to overcome at the Blazers would take the first set. Houston came out strong in the second set, taking a close battle all the way to the end before the Blazers got the best of UH, winning the second set, 25-23.
With one final chance to extend the match, UH was able to mount an 11-6 early lead in the third set. The Cougars continued to dominate play, posting a 22-18 lead and eventually going on to take the win. But the momentum would be short lived as UAB won the fourth set, 25-22, to take the match.
Houston drops to 9-5 all-time in league openers and 15-3 in the all-time series against the Blazers. UAB improves to 8-8 on the year and 2-0 in C-USA.
