Volleyball Sweeps Alcorn State, 3-0

Nacogdoches, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team swept Alcorn State, 3-0 (25-4, 25-9, 25-9) in impressive fashion Friday afternoon in its opening match of the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Invitational.
The Cougars hit a combined season-high .493, replacing their previous best of .264 registered against Boise State last weekend. Houston, however, held their opponent to a dismal -.133, on only eight kills.
The win also marked the lowest total scoring output of a Cougar opponent this season as the Braves were held to a combined 22 points.
Erin Rice went a perfect 6-for-6 against the Braves, while helping the Cougars out-hit their opponent 42-8. Kinsey Cave added eight kills, while Ashley Applequist had a game-high nine kills. Tara Roenicke led the team with 27 assists.
The Braves never came close to the Cougars the entire match. Houston took a 15-4 lead in the opening set and held the Braves scoreless the rest of the way en route to a 25-4 win. UH came off the bench strong in the second set, mounting a 7-0 lead before taking a 2-0 set lead in the final set.
In the third set of the match, Alcorn State opened to a 2-1 lead but Houston quickly regained control and went on for the win. The Cougars put together an 8-0 mid-way through the set to ensure the win.
Houston improves to 3-10 on the season and 1-0 all-time against Alcorn State.
The Cougars will be back on the court tonight for a 7 p.m. match-up against Stephen F. Austin. The tournament will conclude on Saturday against Miami (Ohio) at 10 a.m. Gametracker will be available for all matches of the tournament.
