Los Angeles, Calif. - The University of Houston volleyball team lost to No. 20 UC Irvine 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 17-25) Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion in their second match at the Crowne Plaza LAX Tournament.
The Cougars were led by Kinsey Cave's 10 kills and seven digs. Marluci Toazzi and Amanda Carson finished with 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
UH played a close game with the Anteaters in the first set, even tying the match 19-19 but UC Irvine scored the next two points on a service ace and a Cougar attach error. That two point cushion was just enough to help UC Irvine go on to take the 25-20 win.
The second set opened 6-0 in UC Irvine's favor and that deficit was too much to overcome for the Cougars. With one final chance to extend the match, Houston fell behind 15-7 in the third set before a Cougar timeout was called. Out of the break the Anteaters continued to dominate the match, going on to win 25-17.
Houston's match against the Anteaters on Saturday marked the first against a ranked opponent for the Cougars this season. With the loss, UH falls to 1-9 on the season and 0-3 all-time against UC Irvine.
The Cougars will close out tournament play against Boise State at 7 p.m. Gametracker will be available for the match.
