HOUSTON - The Cougar tennis team enjoyed another outstanding season in 2008-09, but its accomplishments did not just stop on the court as the team recorded the highest overall team GPA at the University of Houston, in addition to posting the highest GPA in head coach John Severance's tenure at UH.
"I am thoroughly pleased with the fact that we achieved all of our high academic goals this season," said Severance. "This year's team has set a very lofty standard for the UH tennis program and for future teams to live up to."
Entering the season, the team's goal was to maintain a 3.5 GPA in the fall and a 3.25 GPA in the spring. The athletes exceeded these goals with a 3.53 GPA in the fall and a 3.34 GPA in the spring.
Eight players were named to the Conference-USA Dean's List - Lucy Forward, Joanna Kacprzyk, Jordan McCombs, Laura Ring, Vicky Simpson, Neila Starratt, Lynley Wasson and Alix Young. In addition, Wasson was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team during her senior campaign.
The team also excelled on the tennis court, finishing 18-4 and appeared at No. 9 in the final ITA Regional Rankings, while sophomore Kacprzyk was selected to the Third Team All-Conference USA.
