HOUSTON - University of Houston pitchers Donnie Joseph and Wes Musick were selected during the first two days of the MLB Draft. Joseph was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft as the 88th overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds, on Tuesday, while Musick was selected in the ninth round by the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
Joseph became the highest Cougar draft pick since Brad Lincoln was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft. This also marked the eighth consecutive season and the 11th time in the last 12 years that at least one Cougar player was chosen in the annual draft.
Additionally, the duo's selection marks the first time since 2005 that two Cougars were selected in the first 10 rounds.
Joseph finished his junior season with a team-high 11 saves, which ranks in a tie for third most in UH single season history and as the second most among C-USA pitchers this season. The Buda, Texas, native also finished with a 2.16 ERA in 50 innings, with a 3-1 record and a team-high 75 strikeouts.
Prior to the Conference USA Championship, Joseph was named to the All-Conference USA First Team and earlier in the season he was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week on March 23 after guiding the Cougars to wins over Lamar and UAB.
Musick was selected in the draft for the second straight season after finishing the 2009 season with a 5-7 record and a 5.97 ERA. He made his third straight opening day start to begin the season and went on the pitch a team-high 75.1 innings, registering 59 strikeouts.
In 2008, Musick was selected in the 24th round by the San Francisco Giants.
The MLB Draft will conclude on Thursday with the final 20 rounds.
MLB DRAFT UPDATE
In addition to the selections of Joseph and Musick, junior pitcher Frank Corolla was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 19th round of the MLB draft.
Corolla emerged early in the season as a weekend starter before becoming used in a relief role later in the year. He finished with 18 appearances on the mound and pitched 41.2 innings with 30 strikeouts.
