HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team earned a three-game sweep of UT Pan Am on Sunday afternoon with a 15-3 win in the final game of the series at Cougar Field.
Caleb Ramsey was one of multiple Cougars to have a successful day at the plate. The Houston native hit a two-run home run over the Cougar Field scoreboard in the fifth inning, plating Zak Presley who reached base on a walk. Ramsey finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs. His three hits were also a career-high.
Blake Kelso also ended the afternoon going 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, tying career-highs in hits and runs. Chris Wallace, William Kankel, Codey Morehouse and John Cannon all hit doubles for the Cougars and Presley added a triple for the Cougars, who ended the afternoon with 16 hits. The Cougars recorded double-digit hits in all four games this week on their way to their sixth consecutive win.
Joey Cesario in just his second career start at catcher went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs.
On the mound, Wes Musick earned the win, pitching seven innings, giving up four hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts. John Touchton and Barry Laird pitched a combined two innings of relief allowing one hit and one run while striking out three batters.
Houston gave up one run to the Broncs in their first at bat but quickly took back the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring Kelso and Ramsey on a double from Wallace. UH added another two runs in the second inning when Taylor White scored on a single from Joey Cesario after reaching base on a walk and UTPA pitcher walked Ramsey to plate Cesario.
William Kankel increased the Cougars lead to four, 5-1, scoring on a wild pitch after doubling to right field to lead off the third inning. Ramsey then hit a single to right center, sending home Presley, Kelso and Cesario to give Houston an 8-2 lead to end the inning.
After Ramsey's home run in the fifth inning, Houston added an additional two runs in the sixth when Kankel scored on a Cesario single and White scored on a ground out to second base from Kelso after reaching base on a walk.
The Cougars final run total came in the eighth inning. They put together three runs with two outs on the board. Morehouse and Cannon hit back-to-back doubles and after Morehouse crossed home on Cannon's hit, Presley plated Cannon and Kelso on a triple down the right field line.
The Broncs scored one run in the top of the ninth but it wouldn't be enough to go home with the win.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 13-17 on the season and took their first series sweep at home since going 3-0 against Princeton on March 9-11, 2007.
