Softball Falls to No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-3

LAFAYETTE, La.--The University of Houston softball team fell to No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-3, Tuesday at Lamson Park, dropping to 23-22 overall.
Louisiana scored three runs to grab an early lead in the first inning and was able to maintain the lead throughout the game, despite Houston outhitting them, 9-5.
Sophomore Katy Beth Sherman and reigning Conference USA Hitter of the Week Jessica Valis hit back-to-back singles in the top of the third inning on two outs, but senior Katie Bush would ground out to second base to end the inning. The two hits extended Sherman and Jessica Valis' hitting streak to seven and six games, respectively.
Houston added their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when on a 1-2 count, senior Elaina Nordstrom knocked one over the left field fence. The home run is Nordstrom's sixth this season. The inning would end with Louisiana up 3-1.
UH added another run in the top of the sixth inning when on two outs, sophomore Angela Spittler hit a single to right field to score sophomore Melissa Gregson, who reached base on a single up the middle. Sherman would ground out to second base to end the inning with a 3-2 deficit to the Ragin' Cajuns.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Louisiana added another run on a RBI-single by Lana Bowers. The inning would end on a groundout with the Ragin' Cajuns leading 4-2.
Houston added one more run in the top of the seventh inning, but it wouldn't be enough, and Louisiana would walk away with the 4-3 win.
Lott moves to 14-10 on the season after striking out five, walking four and allowing four runs on five hits. Houston had a combined nine hits, with Jessica Valis, Gregson, Nordstrom and Sherman each recording two hits.
Next Up
The Cougars will host Marshall in their final three-game conference series, which is scheduled to begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Dave Maggard, Director of Athletics, who just announced his retirement, will be throwing out the first pitch prior to game one to head coach Kyla Holas. In between the doubleheader, the six seniors will be honored.
The final game of the series will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday and will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports with play-by-play by Carter Blackburn and color analysis by F.P. Santangelo.
